Common questions

My drive is steep. What surface should I choose?

Block paving or tarmac are usually best. Imprinted concrete with a textured finish can work too. See our sloping driveways guide.

Why does water pool by my garage?

Usually the drive falls towards the garage with nothing to catch the water. A channel drain at the low point, connected to a soakaway or outlet, solves it.

Can I have gravel on a slope?

We don't recommend it. Gravel drifts downhill. It's best on level drives.

Do I need planning permission?

Not usually, if the surface is permeable or drains to your own garden. More than five square metres of impermeable front garden draining to the road needs permission. Conservation areas can add controls.

How do I get a dropped kerb?

Apply to Durham County Council. We can help you prepare and design the drive around it. See kerb dropping.

Can you build a retaining wall too?

Where a drive is cut into a bank, a retaining edge or wall is often part of the job. Taller walls need proper design.

How long does it take?

It depends on size, slope and surface. Groundwork on a sloping drive often takes longer than the surface itself.

Which villages do you cover?

Shincliffe, Sherburn Village, Bowburn, Brandon, Langley Moor, Ushaw Moor, Brancepeth, Witton Gilbert and more. See areas we serve.
