Level ground only
On a slope, loose gravel works its way downhill and into the road. So we generally only recommend gravel on flat or nearly flat drives. If your drive slopes, we'll suggest a different surface, or a stabilising grid with a paved section at the bottom.
Built properly
We excavate, lay a compacted sub-base, add a membrane and fit a cellular grid that holds the stones in place. Solid edging keeps it tidy and a sett or block apron at the entrance stops stones reaching the pavement.
The stone
Angular gravel of 10 to 20 millimetres knits together better than round pea gravel. Grey granite, golden flint and buff limestone all suit different houses.
Drainage and rules
Gravel lets water straight through, so it usually meets the front garden paving rules without extra drainage.
