What the council considers

Durham County Council is the highway authority. It looks at whether a crossing is safe: visibility, nearby junctions and bus stops, street trees, lamp posts and utility covers, and whether the space is deep enough to park off the footway. On classified roads, planning permission may be needed too.

Sloping streets

On a hill, the kerb, footway and drive all meet at different levels. Getting the transition right means the car doesn't ground out and water doesn't run from the road onto your drive. We plan the drive levels to suit the crossing.

What we do

We can help you understand the requirements, prepare for the application and design the driveway around the crossing. The council will confirm who may carry out the footway work.

Order of work

Get the crossing approved before committing to a new drive.
